Pontsho Kemba, known for her rich oil paintings, shifts medium in this exhibition, using pencil and crayon to depict Black girlhood with both intimacy and defiance. Her childlike illustrations challenge the conventional romanticization of femininity, instead offering a nuanced exploration of care, vulnerability, and emotional depth. Through her delicate yet assertive visual language, Kemba captures the contradictions, joys, and struggles inherent in growing up as a Black girl.

In response, Rachel Ngeitokondjo Sakeus documents her own journey as a queer Oshiwambo woman, weaving together photography, collage, and archival materials. Her layered works trace the paths of self-discovery, spirituality, and healing, blending personal symbolism with collective memory. Sakeus’s art creates a space where vulnerability, resilience, and transformation coexist, highlighting the multiplicity of queer and feminine experiences in Namibia.

Together, Kemba and Sakeus unravel the emotional threads that shape girlhood, honoring its beauty, confusion, and continual evolution. Threads recognizes that healing is never linear: it loops, knots, and circles back, holding space for reflection, return, and renewal. The exhibition invites viewers to witness and engage with these interwoven journeys, fostering empathy, understanding, and connection across experiences of identity, growth, and selfhood.
