SEEING THE WORLD DIFFERENTLY

The project brought together young people from the National Institute for Special Education (NISE) in Windhoek, Eluwa Special School in Ongwediva and Usko Nghaama Special School in Eenhana.

Early in 2026, participants took part in three photography workshops organised by OYO, where they learned the basics of photography and explored the theme of happiness.

Following the workshops, participants were encouraged to continue photographing the people, places, experiences and everyday moments that mattered to them, using mobile phones or any cameras available to them.

The response was remarkable.

510 photographs were submitted.

OYO subsequently returned to the three schools, where learners reviewed the photographs and selected their favourites. The process resulted in a final collection of 42 photographs, now brought together in the ‘Hear Me’ exhibition.

MORE ALIKE THAN DIFFERENT

At its heart, ‘Hear Me’ is about much more than photography.

The exhibition offers audiences an opportunity to encounter the individual stories, emotions and experiences of young people living with disabilities, while reflecting on the everyday moments that connect us all.

Through their photographs, the young participants share their perspectives on happiness, identity, relationships and everyday life.

Rather than defining the participants through disability, the exhibition places their own perspectives at the centre—encouraging audiences to consider the people, stories and experiences behind each image.

‘Hear Me’ asks us to do more than simply look.

It invites us to listen to the voices behind the images, to recognise the person and story within each photograph, and to consider what it means to truly see—and be seen.

OFFICIAL OPENING

The exhibition will officially open on Tuesday, 10 November 2026 at 18:00 at the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre (FNCC).

The opening will take place in the presence of H.E. Katja Kalamäki, Ambassador of Finland to Namibia.

The exhibition will remain on display from 11 to 26 November, with the closing taking place on the morning of Friday, 27 November.
